Geografia fisica

Hamhŭng si trova sul ramo sinistro del fiume Sŏngch'ŏn, nella parte orientale della pianura di Hamhŭng (함흥평야), nel Hamgyŏng Meridionale, nel nord-est della Corea del Nord. Il Tonghŭngsan è alto 319 metri.
